1972 - Team
USSR defeated Team Canada 7-3 in Montreal, in Game 1
of the 1972 Summit Series.
1976 - Canada defeated Finland 11-2 in the
first Canada Cup Tournament game.
September 1
1883 - Hall of Famer
Didier Pitre born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. Pitre played
in the NHL 1917-18 through 1922-23 with Montreal.
1994 - The Anaheim Mighty Ducks signed F Paul
Kariya (1993 First Round Draft Choice) to a three year
deal.
August 31
1931 - Hall of Famer
Jean Beliveau born in Trois Rivieres, Que. Beliveau
played in the NHL 1950-51 through 1970-71 with Montreal.
1987 - Philadelphia Flyers traded Darren
Jensen and Daryl Stanley to Vancouver in exchange for
Wendell Young and 3rd round draft pick in 1990.
August 30
1966 - Former NHL center
Simon Wheeldon born in Vancouver, B.C. He played in
the NHL 1987-88 through 1990-91 with the New York Rangers
and Winnipeg.
August 29
1901 - Hall of Famer
Aurel Joliat born in Ottawa, Ont. Joliat played in the
NHL 1922-23 through 1937-38 with Montreal.
August 28
1989 - Veteran Lanny
McDonald announced his retirement after 16 years in
the NHL.
August 27

August 26
1961 - The official opening
of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
1998 - Mike Gartner (the 5th highest
goal scorer in NHL history) retired after 19 seasons
in the league. Gartner scored 708 goals, 627 assists
and 1,335 career points, the 18th most in NHL history
at the time of his retirement.
August 25
1938 - Montreal Maroons'
franchise suspended operation as an NHL franchise. Originally
announced as "a one year suspension", the
Maroons never returned to the NHL.
1976 - The Colorado Rockies received their
NHL franchise, to complete their transfer from Kansas
City.
1997 - Dale Hawerchuk announced his retirement,
due to an arthritic left hip. Hawerchuk retired with
518 goals, 891 assists in 1,188 NHL games. He retired
10th all-time in NHL points.
